Cashback apps sound better than they are — until you find the ones that actually work. We spent 6 months running $4,800 in purchases through 12 different apps to see who actually paid out and who was mostly hype.
Methodology
We tracked 6 months of purchases across grocery, retail, dining, and online shopping categories. We recorded sign-up bonuses, payout thresholds, payout timelines, and actual dollars received. Annual earnings projections assume $8,000/year in tracked spend.
The 7 Worth Using
1. Rakuten — Projected Annual Earnings: $180–$380
The heavyweight. 3,500+ partner stores, up to 40% cashback at premium retailers. The $30 sign-up bonus (after $30 spend) is the best new-user offer in the category. Pays via PayPal or check quarterly. If you shop online at all, Rakuten is non-negotiable.
2. Ibotta — Projected Annual Earnings: $120–$240 (groceries only)
Best cashback app for grocery shopping. Works in-store and online. Average $10–$20 back per month if you buy name brands. Integrates with Instacart, DoorDash, and major supermarket chains. New users get $20 welcome bonus.
3. Fetch Rewards — Projected Annual Earnings: $30–$60
Lowest effort of any cashback app — scan any grocery receipt (doesn't matter where you shopped) and earn points on hundreds of brands. Points convert to gift cards. Won't make you rich but requires zero behavior change.
4. Capital One Shopping — Projected Annual Earnings: $80–$150
Browser extension that automatically applies coupon codes and earns cashback at 15,000+ stores. Works even without a Capital One card. Best feature: it shows you if another retailer has the same product cheaper before you buy.
5. Dosh — Projected Annual Earnings: $60–$120
Link your debit or credit card and get automatic cashback at 10,000+ restaurants, hotels, and stores. Zero effort — no scanning receipts, no activating offers. Just spend and earn. Best for frequent restaurant and hotel spend.
The 5 We Dropped (And Why)
Fluz: Decent on paper, terrible payout process. $75 minimum threshold with a 90-day delay.
Checkout 51: Narrow grocery selection, most offers require brands you wouldn't normally buy.
Swagbucks: Misleading earnings claims. Actual hourly rate on surveys: $0.40–$1.20/hour.
Shopkick: Walking into stores for points is not a viable savings strategy.
Drop: Never paid out above $15 despite months of use. Low offer selection.
Stack for Maximum Returns
The optimal stack: Use Rakuten for online shopping → Ibotta for groceries → Fetch to scan any remaining grocery receipts → Dosh linked to your primary card for passive restaurant/hotel cashback. No overlap, maximum coverage.
